There are 40 individual forest preserves for the purpose of protecting the natural beauty of Winnebago County, as well as for education and recreation.
The forest preserves provide over 9,500 acres of property for the use and enjoyment of the general public. Lush woods, picturesque streams, dramatic cliffs and dells, unspoiled prairies and native wildlife are treasures to be enjoyed by residents and visitors of all ages.
Hiking, camping, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, bird watching and cross-country skiing are recreational activities available at sites throughout the county.

Four Lakes
Four Lakes is 168.3-acres containing four small man-made lakes. This is the District’s most popular fishing area. Fish stocked include: bluegills, channel catfish, largemouth bass (catch & release on bass at this location), walleye, brown bullheads, redear sunfish, northern pike, golden and silver shiners, fathead minnows.
The entrance at 10180 Trask Bridge Road (Highway 70), Pecatonica, IL 61063 has a sporting dog training area that is open year round. It requires on-site day use registration at no charge. Rules and regulations are posted. Dogs should be kept within training posted boundary signs. There are 25 acres of upland field training area and 1/2 acre pond for retriever training. This is a great area for those wanting to run and train their sporting breed pointers, flushers, and retrievers.

7.7 miles from Rockford city limits. Highway 70/Kilburn Ave/Trask Bridge Road - 7.7 miles to Eddie Road (next intersection after Wempletown). South 3/4 mile to Fish Hatchery Road. West 1 mile to the preserve entrance.
